Kolkata An elderly couple was found murdered in the garage of their house near Baghajatin late on Friday night.

The victims — Kalyan Moitra (72), a retired lawyer, and his wife Mridula (68) — used to live in a three-storeyed house. Their daughter, Poonam, is married and lives at Fern Road. The couple’s son, who used to live with them, had died a year ago in an accident.

Initial investigation revealed the couple was hacked to death a few days ago and their bodies were dumped in the garage. The police suspect their driver, Bapi, who has been missing since the incident, could be behind the murder.

According to insiders, the services of the driver, who reportedly had the habit of stealing things, was recently terminated by the old couple. Revenge could be a possible reason behind the murder, said a police officer.

The officer said Poonam has told the police that despite her repeated attempts to contact her parents, their landline went unanswered for the last three-four days. She then decided to visit them. Yesterday, she along with her husband Dipanjan, reached Baghajatin only to find the main gate locked.

As she tried to peep into the house through the letter box, she spotted blood in the garage. Suspecting foul play, she called the neighbours and the police. After opening the door with a duplicate key, the police found the decomposed bodies in the garage.

Nothing, however, had gone missing from the house.
