Days are changing, certainly. Amidst the buzzing Hindi and English films striking the big screen, Marathi cinema is gearing up to make its presence felt, once again. This time it's with Dohaa (Dark Waters). A directorial debut of Pushkaraj Paranjpe, Dohaa aims at meeting international standards by presenting a simple story, in the most authentic.

" Dohaa has not been created out of a professional need but out of my true passion for films," says Paranjpe, the budding director. An architect by profession, he has done his Masters in film direction and acting and has also worked as assistant director for Amol Palekar's Paheli.

"The novel Kaleshar Paani by H.M. Marathe motivated me to write this script. When I read the novel, I knew that I wanted to craft it into a film. The story of the film is very different from whatever we have seen till date and when I narrated it to Sairam Iyer, a passionate film buff, he immediately agreed to produce the film. It may sound like a cliché but it's solely to his credit that this film is seeing the light of the day and I salute him for his gusto," says Paranjpe talking about the inspiration behind the film.

Working with a fresh team did demand enormous efforts from him but Paranjape was willing enough. "That is because I was blessed with an energetic, passionate and disciplined team and the film was made in just 22 days," says Paranjpe. The film, shot near the village Bhor, has been made using latest technologies like sync sound recording .

Set in present-day rural Western India, Dohaa is the story of physical lust and its horrific consequences on two tender lives. Bhiki, a single mother of three, is the mistress of the macho Vishnu and survives by selling fritters under his abusive protection. Kamli, Bhiki's eldest daughter, is not academically inclined but insists on attending school as it is the only escape from her impoverished surroundings. On the verge of puberty, Kamli is shunned by her classmates and picked on by the teacher. While the village grocer and class bully lust for her, Kamli develops tender feelings for the handsome, intelligent and kind Ajay, who arrives from Mumbai and joins her class. Confused by Bhiki's constant pressure to ensnare Ajay into a physical relationship, Kamli tries to seduce him awkwardly. Watching Ajay and Kamli in the act, Bhiki offers herself forcibly to Ajay.

Will the swirling dark waters of poverty and animalistic lust surrounding Kamli destroy her innocence, her capacity to love tenderly and devour her or will she survive to grow stronger? The movie that released on January 4, certainly evokes interest. " I am certain that who ever will see the film not be able to forget it for a long time after he or she walks out of the cinema hall," says Paranjpe.
