Khanna A seminar on ‘Judicial activism’ was organised at AS College for Women on Friday. Students from Rajiv Law College, Patiala, and delegates from various other colleges participated in the seminar.

Vijendar Jain, retired chief justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court, who was the chief guest on the occasion, answered their queries during question-answer session.

“An alternative mechanism should be adopted to minimise pending cases in the judicial courts of India,” opined Jain talking to Newsline. “About 5.70 lakh cases are pending in Punjab and 5.25 lakh in Haryana while 2.5 lakh are waiting to be disposed of in Punjab and Haryana High court.”

Jain said, “There is a shortage of judicial officers also and when I took over as chief justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court, I recruited 200 judicial officers each in Punjab and Haryana.”

Jain feared that delay in justice could erode people’s faith in the judiciary. “There is one judge for one million people in India in comparison to one judge for 80,000 people in developed countries,” said Jain.

“After my retirement, I am working as a social activist to create awareness among people against female foeticide,” said who is also working with the organisations fighting against terrorism.
