Kolkata The central government today issued a notification saying the investigation in the Jnaneswari Express incident at Sardiha in West Midnapore would be conducted by the CBI but the Kolkata zonal office of the agency was not sure if the probe would be conducted by a team from Delhi or by its sleuths in the state.

The CID and Bengal police are also in the dark about the technicalities of the inquiry and how the investigation would be conducted.

The Union home ministry had earlier said the Bengal government and the Railways have been asked to help the CBI and hence it would be a joint probe.

“We have not received any order as of now. If it is a CBI probe, then the chargesheet will have be submitted by the agency. No other agency can conduct a parallel probe when the case has been taken over by the CBI,” DGP Bhupinder Singh said earlier in the day.

“But the CBI sleuths have to rely on the reports of Bengal police as and when they start the investigation or they would miss out on evidence since the rail track has been restored and the coaches of both the goods train and the express train have been removed,” said DGP Bhupinder Singh.

Meanwhile, claiming that the PCAPA cadres Bapi Mahato and Umakanto Mahato were framed in the case involving the Jnaneswari Express incident at Sardiha on May 28, the Maoists today called for 12-hour bandh in Jhargarm block, leading to a complete shutdown in the Jhargram town and other villages.

“They have been framed by the state government. Their names have been dragged without their involvement,” said PCAPA leader Asit Mahato.

However, a few days ago, Bapi had confessed to The Indian Express that the sabotage at the rail track near Sardiha was done by them and that their target was the goods train and not the passenger train.

Meanwhile, a senior officer said around 15 villagers from the Manikpara area have been detained for interrogation. One of them is said to be directly involved in the incident.
