The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is using extra-long girders to build the elevated stretch of the Airport Express Line to facilitate the completion of the project before the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Such girders, which are 25 metres long and weigh approximately 120 tonnes each, have earlier been used only in China and Taipei. They are being used for the first time in India.

Generally, 2.5- to 3-metre girders are used on the other under construction corridors of the Delhi Metro. These extra long girders are being used on the Airport Express Line to expedite the construction process as the line is to be opened by October 2010.
