Delhi on the upward curve

New Delhi Delhi’s socio-economic profile has registered an upward trend over the past few years.

Here are a few examples:

* The total number of schools in Delhi increased from 4,536 in 2003-04 to 5,036 in 2007-08. The total number of schools under the Directorate of Education during this period, however, reduced from 1,231 in 2003-04 to 1,183 in 2007-08

* The number of MCD primary schools has increased from 1653 in 2003-04 to 1876 in 2007-08

* The total number of hospitals, including maternity homes in Delhi, has increased from 588 in 2003-04 to 738 in 2007-08, with a provision of 36,242 hospital beds as compared to 32,188 beds in 2003-04

* The number of senior citizens benefiting from the Old Age Pension Scheme has increased from 1.40 lakh in 2003-04 to 1.85 lakh in 2007-08

* The number of women in distress assisted by the police has increased from 2,842 in 2003-04 to 9,138 in 2007-08

* The peak demand of electricity has increased from 3626 MW in 2005-06 to 4036 MW in 2007-08

* The total water supply capacity increased from 670 MGD in 2003-04 to 740 MGD in 2007-08.

* The total number of factories registered under the Factories Act in Delhi increased from 7,013 in 2002-03 to 7,914 in 2007-08.

* The total green cover of Delhi has increased from 151 sq km in 2001 to 283 sq km in 2005.

* The total number of ration cards decreased from 38.67 lakh in 2003-04 to 28.04 lakh in 2007-08

* The Annual Plan Outlay for Delhi increased from Rs 5,000 crore in 2004-05 to Rs 10,000 crore in 2008-09

* The projected population of Delhi as on October 1, 2007 reached 1.68 crore
