Ahmedabad On the eve of the centenary celebration of International Women’s Day, the All India Mahila Sanskritik Sangathan has demanded an end to atrocities against women, and also sought equality and freedom.

It has also demanded that there should be no repeat of the Patan gangrape incident.

The organisation has termed the judgment in the Patan case a significant event coinciding with International Women’s Day.

To mark the occasion, the Sangathan held an exhibition depicting the history of International Women’s Day and the role of women leaders throughout the world. The exhibition highlighted the role of social reform movement in India and the role played by women in the Indian Freedom Struggle.

The exhibition also highlighted important quotes on emancipation of women from different personalities of the world.

Eminent writer and activist Suarnaben emphasised on emancipation of women, while the Gujarat convenor of the Sangathan, Meenakshi Joshi, highlighted the subjugation of women in the state. She reiterated the struggle of women in the state in the backdrop of the Patan incident. Joshi and Bhavik Raja, the secretary of All India Democratic Students’ Organisation, lauded the courage of the victim and the unique support from students and the guardians who braved all threats and intimidations to ensure justice.

Joshi also appealed to the women to observe International Women’s Day in a dignified manner.

She said the message of emancipation of women will be carried out across the state during the centenary celebration of International Women’s Day.

Girl students joined the programme enthusiastically in Surat on Friday in spite of examinations. An exhibition and demonstration was also held in Vadodara on Saturday.
