DES law college wins Surana moot court contest

Pune, February 5 The 7th Surana and Surana International Technology Law moot court competition, 2008 was held in association with Symbiosis Law School February 4. DES College of Law, Pune, won the moot court competition, defeating NALSAR, Hyderabad in a nail-biting encounter in the finals. The finals were judged by a bench consisting of Justice Vikramaditya Prasad, retired judge of Jharkhand High Court, Prof Dr Rebecca Todd, Fulbright Scholar at Symbiosis Law School and Yashwanth Shenoy, legal counsel, BT. The best memorial was won by NLSIU, Bangalore, NALSAR won the spirit of Surana award. C J Rawandale, vice-principal, SLS, delivered a vote of thanks.

The valedictory program was organised by the Symbiosis Law School at the Vishwabhavan Auditorium. Advocates Ram Jethmalani and Mahesh Jethmalani, Symbiosis founder-director Dr S B Mujumdar, vice- chancellor Dr M S Raste, joint director Dr Vidya Yeravedekar and S Ravichandran of Surana and Surana International attorneys, were among those present. The program also witnessed the launch of the quarterly law newsletter of Symbiosis Law School, Lex Novum.

In the welcome address, Symbiosis Law School principal Dr Shashikala Gurpur spoke about the passing of legal acumen through the Jethmalani family and stressed on quality judging by the international scholars who came to symbiosis through Erasmus Mundus Program and Fulbright scholarship. Mujumdar said it was a privilege to have both Ram Jethmalani and his son Mahesh Jethmalani on the dais for the first time. He thanked all the other esteemed judges for having graced the occasion.

Ram Jethmalani expressed happiness on being a part of the Symbiosis family and spoke about the importance of professional ethics of lawyers. He, along with Rajendra Singh of Jabalpur, had drafted a code on professional ethicis in 1964.

Mahesh Jethmalani spoke about legal system and the need to change it. He said it was the need of the hour to improve the quality of the legal system. “A lawyer has four important personal obligations — fiduciary duty to client, professional respect for the opposition, duty towards the court and notion of public service. They owe a duty of confidentiality to the clients.” He advised lawyers to give fair and candid advice to their clients and asked them to settle disputes through arbitration and mediation.
