Even as the world observes yet another Diabetes Day on November 14, there are several children suffering from an auto immune disorder known as Type 1 diabetes that is irreversible once it strikes.
And yet, Vidya assures there is no need to panic. Working as a peer educator at the diabetes unit of KEM Hospital for the last four years, she admits that finding out that one has diabetes is scary. “Type 1 diabetes is serious, but we can still live long and healthy lives,” she smiles as she provides useful tips at the unit for parents of such children.
Dr C S Yajnik, director of the diabetes unit of KEM Hospital says Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. He explains that the body in Type 1 diabetes does not produce insulin which is a hormone required to convert sugar (glucose) starch and other food into energy needed for daily life.
Dr Shailaja Kale, diabetologist, said over 500 children suffering from juvenile diabetes were being treated and counselled at KEM Hospital.
In fact, a unique recipe competition will be held on November 15 at the OPD of the unit. “The important things is that their blood sugar levels need to be monitored throughout their lives,” said Kale.
A unique project is also being conducted by the founder of Diabetes Care and Research foundation Dr Abhay Mutha. “We look after 105 children from the age of three years to less than 18 who are suffering from Type 1 diabetes. We sponsor their insulin, counsel them and provide treatment at Ruby Hall Clinic,” said Mutha, who is also the chief diabetologist at Ruby Hall Clinic. The cost of caring for each child is at least Rs 3,000 per month, he said.
While Mutha’s foundation has organised a roadshow on Thursday and Friday and a walkathon from Shaniwar Wada till Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir, the diabetologist feels a great deal of awareness needs to be created about Type 1 diabetes.
According to Dr Neelam Kumari, physician at the KEM diabetes unit, the cost of bringing up a child suffering from juvenile diabetes is three times more than the normal child.
