Surat After having failed to do much business in the last couple of months, a diamond trader committed suicide at Lasakana village in Surat district on Wednesday. This was the 20th suicide reported in the last three months in the district.

According to the police, Ramesh Arjan Taravia (45), a resident of Suncity Society at Nana Varachha, went to Laskana at Nanubhai Wadi and consumed poison. Some passers-by spotted him lying in an unconscious state and took him to the Sudip Hospital in Varachha and later informed the Kamrej police.

Sources said that Ramesh traded in diamonds at the Varachha Mini Hira Bazaar and had suffered losses in the last two months due to falling demand.

Investigations revealed that Ramesh, father of three, was in depression for the last few days and used to remain locked inside his room for hours.

Sub-Inspector P D Vaghela said: “After preliminary investigations, we found that the deceased was facing a financial crisis, as a result of which, he might have taken the drastic step. We are yet to ascertain whether he had taken any loan from his friends.”

Dinesh Navadia, vice-president of the Surat Diamond Association, said that they cannot do “anything” in incidents of suicide by people associated with the diamond industry.

“We only have to work for the industry. Nobody can prevent these people from taking such extreme steps. Only the state and the Central governments can do something to save the industry and to stop such incidents. The industry continues to suffer. We have lost the hope for business. Many diamond merchants are surviving by selling their valuables,” Navadia said.
