According to the investigation, Sanjay had been working as a polisher with a diamond cutting unit at Damnagar, a small town in Amreli district. He had lost his job since the unit where he was working shut down after Diwali following the economic slump .
The police said Sanjay did try his hand at other work, like working in the fields, but was unhappy. “He earned around Rs 9,000 to Rs 10,000 per month, which went down to a couple of thousands when he worked as an agricultural labourer.
As many as 300 units in Amreli and Bhavnagar have downed their shutters recently. Since October, only 50 per cent of the nearly 1,200 units in Bhavnagar and Amreli districts have re-opened after the Diwali vacations. The rest have not opened yet, leaving nearly five lakh people jobless.
