Diamond workers protest against relief package

Rajkot Around 100 diamond workers in Amreli have submitted a memorandum to the district collectorate to register their protest against the relief package announced by the state government for revival of the diamond industry.

According to sources, similar memoranda has been submitted to the district authorities by the diamond workers in Rajkot and Bhavnagar.

The initiative undertaken by the diamond workers to show their protest by submitting memoranda to district authorities has been directed by the Gujarat Diamond Federation, an umbrella organisation of 42 diamond associations.

The federation has described the relief package announced by the state government as too little and too late for the industry, which comprises 20 lakh workers.

The state government has announced to provide training to diamond workers in the field of jewellery designing with a stipend of Rs 2,500 whereas the federation has demanded below poverty line cards, free transport service and free education for the workers’ children.
