Kolkata Softening her stand on the issue of fuel price hike, Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee today said she would not “quarrel” with her ally at the Centre, but use democratic means to “appeal” to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to roll back the hike. She maintained that the Trinamool Congress would stay with the UPA.

Soon after the Union Budget was presented, Banerjee had opposed the price rise and the following day, Trinamool Congress leaders Partha Chatterjee and Sudip Banerjee held a rally in Kolkata.

On Tuesday, however, Banerjee told reporters at her south Kolkata residence that she had written to the Prime Minister requesting him to withdraw the hiked prices of petrol and diesel.

“We have registered our protest over the price rise in a very democratic way by writing a letter to the Prime Minister. We have appealed to him to roll back the hike. But we will not quarrel with the Congress over the issue of price rise or fight with them. Every political party has the right to express its views on various issue and we have expressed ours on the price rise to the Prime Minister,” Banerjee said before leaving for Delhi.

She also made it clear that she would not quit the UPA. “We were with the UPA, we are with the coalition and we will be with them,” Banerjee said.

The railway minister also lauded Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for holding talks with the chief ministers of all the states to find out measures to check the price rise of essential commodities.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Deepa Dasmunsi said today her party would campaign against the Railway Budget if the Trinamool continues to oppose the Union Budget.

The Congress core committee, in its meeting on Monday, had decided to go to the people and explain the rationale behind the Centre’s decision to increase the price of petrol and diesel.

Didi's public interest! by hritaG on 04 Mar 2010

it has proved that Mamata didi won't do anything that could cost her West Bengal's CM's chair which is she believes within striking distance. So her agitation against fuel price for 'public interest' (owning Bengal CM's chair!) ended for 'public interest'!

Didi' s hypocrisy! by P.Banerjee on 03 Mar 2010

Didi's now matured enough not to secede from UPA on price hike or any graver issue, whatsoever, unlike the way she'd quit NDA at the drop of a hat,as secession would give a jolt to her alliance with congress, that might elude her long cherised dream of being the Chiefminister of Bengal. So she's softened.

PRINCIPLE by N.ASTI on 03 Mar 2010

It's a principle of Indian politicians that CHAIR CANNOT BE SACRIFICED FOR ANY MATTER THEN WHY for such trifling matters as PRICE-RISE.MMS knows very well this greed of politicians, hence ruled out reconsideration. Moreover Indian public has no memory power so mindlessly going to vote for UPA.Indians!Best luck for price-rise as a service to UPA. Public can gladly sacrifice this much.

Didi and fuel price drama by Surenkumar on 03 Mar 2010

Nothing surprising. Power at all cost for Didi and all allies of Congress. The word allies can be reworded to "all lies", which is what they have been feeding public. If we can have a true and unbiased election then UPA will bite the dust. But as long this is not possible anti common man policies will be the way ahead for UPA. God save us.
