Kolkata Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee announced her ministry was considering setting up of a monorail service at Behala.

Speaking at the inauguration of the computerised reservation centre at Thakurpukur on Sunday, Banerjee said she was contemplating a monorail system from Joka to Majherhat to reduce travel time and the problems faced due to lack of good transport system in the area. A survey for the project has already been commissioned, she added.

One of the most congested areas in Kolkata, the monorail or elevated railway system will take up little space and thus ease the situation in the area, Banerjee said.

The Trinamool Congress chief said she was considering sending a proposal to the state government to give the tram lines to the Railway Ministry. “As very few trams ply in the tram line from Behala Chourasta to Joka, converting it into rail lines makes more sense,” she said.

In January, two special trains will run from New Delhi to Ganga Sagar for the Ganga Sagar Mela. Bangerjee also announced that reservation counters will soon be introduced remote areas.
