The exhibition will focus on the causes of occurrence of common natural and manmade disasters. There will also be live demonstrations of mitigation strategies.
“In tandem with the social objectives of our institute, we had instituted a disaster management cell in April 2007 to provide disaster prevention and preparedness education to our students and to local communities. To achieve this agenda, we have been working with school children. The exhibition is just one of our efforts to spread awareness,” said Dr N M Kondap, vice-chancellor of NMIMS.
Participating schools include the Chaturbhuj Narsee Memorial School, Shrimati Gokalibai Punamchand Pitambar High School and Shri Manilal Vadilal Nanavati School.
According to Dr Meena Galliara, chairperson of NMIMS’ social enterprise cell, the exhibition is designed by school children and teachers, disaster management experts from the government, non-governmental organisations and the industry. She said: “No other B-school has a programme like the disaster management programme at NMIMS. We believe in training young industry executives because tomorrow they will be the ones heading companies.” The Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, Civil Defence, Mutual Aid Response Group, Mahanagar Gas Limited, Excel Industries, Tata Consultancy Services and a few other organisations have also provided support to the venture.
Vilas Vaidya, chief officer of the BMC’s disaster management cell, said: “We have been working at the grassroots level to provide training to the general public, school students, police, government employees. We have organised over 150 programmes in schools.”
