Pune, January 4 With Pune district slated to launch the Maharashtra Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MREGS) from April, the collectorate has geared up to train 20,000 officers and survey the families who want to register under the scheme. The scheme under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005 guarantees 100 days of employment in a financial year to any rural household whose adult members are willing to do any unskilled manual work in their village. The Act came into force initially in 200 districts and has now been gradually extended to all states and will cover the entire country in five years.

“The choice of work seeks to address the causes of chronic poverty: such as drought, deforestation and soil erosion,’’ said deputy collector MREGS Prakash Kadam. The survey will commence soon. The families will be given the requisite job card and the service record maintained. It will be updated on the web. “The scheme provides alternative work during non-farming season. Farmers can continue to have a source of income in the village itself.

“The programmes will have a time frame for each level. The survey on. Kadam will ensure that cards will be issued from January 26 in gram sabhas. “Last year we had around 27,000 youth seeking employment in the unskilled work. This year, with the job cards, there will be many more,” he says.
