Ludhiana Dr Manish Munjal, ENT professor and head, Department of Neck Surgery, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), was conferred the KU Shah Senior Consultant Gold medal at a conference of the Association of Otolaryngologists of India (AOICON) in Jaipur recently.

The recipient of the medal is decided by a panel of judges every year from among senior surgeons from across the country who present their work at the annual conference of AOICON.

Dr Munjal is a pioneer in endoscopic surgery of the nose and sinus. He presented his exhaustive research work in endoscopic surgery at AOICON.

He said the hollow areas above and below the eyes and on either side of the nose, produce secretions, which in the normal course, flows freely into the nose and then trickles back into the throat from where they are finally swallowed.

"Excess production of secretions or obstacles in the normal routes of drainage leads to their stagnation in the sinus, which facilitates the growth of bacteria or fungi and in the formation of pus, which further presses upon on the walls of the sinuses, giving mild to excruciating headaches."
