Pune, March 29 Life came to a standstill for IT consultant Somit Das (name changed) on March 8, 2007, when his wife Vinita (name changed) filed a petition under the Domestic Violence Act, but instead of succumbing to the ‘planned’ atrocities of his wife, Somit decided to tread on the road less traveled. With the help of like-minded people, he started ‘Save Indian Family Foundation,’ a forum which exposes the lop-sidedness of the Indian legal system, especially with reference to the anti-dowry law (498A) and the Domestic Violence Act.

And on Saturday, Somit along with hundreds of other victims, who had to bear the brunt due to the misuse of 498A and Domestic Violence Act protested in front of the Shivajinagar Court, drawing the attention of the masses.

Elaborating on the misuse of the two legislations mentioned, Somit says, “There are more than 30,000 instances, where these two Acts have been misused grossly for vested interests.” Talking about the local scenario, he said that in Pune, the helpline gets about 5-6 calls everyday, which clearly indicates the growing size of the problem.

Speaking about the foundation, the president of the Pune chapter Amitabh Dasgupta said, “Save India Family Foundation, an NGO working for the rights of men and fighting against the misuse of anti-dowry laws and other woman-protection laws, today demanded the establishment of a Men's Welfare ministry and National Commission for Men.”

He added that the protests would be held every month in different parts of India till the Parliament amends the laws to ‘stop legal terrorism’ and makes all the laws 'gender neutral' and ‘crime based.’ A series of protests in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Lucknow have been planned by the respective chapters of Save Indian Family Foundation.

It was not until the Union Minister for Human Resources Development (Arjun Singh) was accused of dowry harassment that Renuka Chaudhary (Union Minister for Women welfare) finally acknowledged the misuse of anti-dowry laws in public.
