Chandigarh, February 25 The Centre for Industry Institute Partnership Programme (CIIPP) has been involved in a number of projects to bring industry and the academia closer. The centre has also managed to achieve a turnover of nearly Rs one crore and has also transferred the surplus generated from various activities, close to Rs 50 lakh, to the higher education fund of the varsity. The centre has expanded its area of activity in the last few years.

Research

Most of the research projects granted to the PU departments by the industry are routed through the CIIPP. The Director, Prof A K Saihjpal, said, “The medium and small scale industries approach us for research and development work, as they lack resources to set up their own research labs. We are approached for various tests that they want to conduct.”

A majority of the projects have been conducted for departments like Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology, University Institute of Engineering and Technology, University Business School and the Physics and Chemistry department.

Management Skills

The centre provides training in soft skills to personnel recruited into the industry. Various training programmes have been held for the corporate and the banking sector. When Dr Reddy’s Pharmaceutical Company started operations in Baddi, a batch of nearly 60 personnel was trained by the varsity in all aspects.

CIIPP has recently started a programme for the students belonging to scheduled castes and minority groups. The students will be provided training on appearing for interviews, developing communication skills, making resume etc. Training will be provided free of cost to the varsity students.

Teaching and Entrepreneur Development Programme

The centre aims to produce students who are not job seekers, but job creators. Entrepreneur Development Programmes are held in different departments in the varsity. Prof Saihjpal says, “We had also organised a programme in Jalandhar. A number of women have started their own business. We train them in the areas they are interested.”

The centre has also started a certificate course on the Ludhiana Stock Exchange. The course has generated a good response with a number of retired citizens, housewives etc enrolling for the course.

Every week-end classes are held for personnel from industry who could not complete their education. They are pursuing courses like B Sc through distance learning courses. Classes are held in the University building.

University Institute of Applied Management Sciences

The centre provided nearly Rs 60 lakh as seed money to the University Institute of Applied Management Sciences (UIPS). The institute has also introduced nearly six MBA courses. The courses include MBA in retail management, banking and insurance management, telecommunication and IT, infrastructural management, pharmaceutical management and hospital administration.

Prof Saihjpal said, “During interactions with industry officials, we found that companies require well trained students. Infrastructure is also being developed at a rapid pace.” The institute will have 200 seats and will function six days a week.

Recruitment exams

CIIPP also conducts recruitment exams for many industries. This activity generates more than Rs 41 lakh a year. Prof Saihjpal said that the institute has conducted recruitment drives in almost all major cities in the country. Prof Saihjpal informs that they have conducted recruitments in almost all capital towns of the country.
