Mumbai, March 8 Though it was an inter-school hockey final, it was a football theme song - Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal - that was played on the loudspeakers during the breaks.

Holders Don Bosco, Matunga reigned supreme in the under-10 and under-12 finals while beating St Andrew’s 1-0 and their senior counterparts staved off St Anne’s late challenge to overpower them 2-1 at the St Stanislaus ground on Saturday.

The Bosco under-10 team might have won by a solitary goal, but the joy was no less. Every one was keen to finish off the match during full time as they dreaded the prospect of going into penalties to decide the issue.

When the match-winner came towards the dying minutes of the match off Keanu D’Souza’s stick, the troupe of Bosco supporters were on their feet. And when the umpire blew the final whistle, the entire Bosco camp could not help but dance to the tunes of the popular song of the day.

But it was just the first battle under their belt with the war yet to be won as under-12 team was still warming for their match.

Like the earlier match, there were no goals in the first half. But the second segment turned to be a thriller as all the three goals came in it.

When Bosco’s Dalyn Fernandes entered the Anne’s goal area, he did not look threatening and he casually crossed the ball to Karan Shah who ran up to the goal line and got the ball back to sound the boards and give the Matunga outfit a 1-0 lead.

The goal seemed to give the Bosco players a further boost of enthusiasm and suddenly the Anne’s defenders, who had so far done a decent job of keeping a check on the marauding Bosco strikers looked lost and in no time Romario D’Rego struck to double the lead.

But there was a sudden change in fortunes towards the Bosco end as St Anne’s Alton Fernandes got his team back into the match. His inspired strike made the match come alive, but it was not enough. In fact, it made the Bosco defence led by Karan Shah and Merick Fernandes, more alert.

And again as the whistle shrilled in the air, it was time for the supporters to rejoice along with the Bosco team.
