Amritsar With the arrest of five persons, the city police today claimed to have solved the double murder case in which a retired patwari, Iqbal Singh, and his paramour, Gurtej Kaur were found murdered in Chheharta on the night of January 14.

Claiming it to be a contract killing over a land dispute, the police said that during the investigation, it was found that accused Harpreet Singh, alias Babba, a resident of Gate Hakiman and the grandson of Iqbal Singh, had hatched a conspiracy to kill his grandfather. The police have arrested Sarmail Singh, alias Shaila, Jaspal Singh, alias Pala, Mukhtiar Singh, alias Mukha, and Tarsem Singh, alias Sema.

The bone of contention was the sale of four acres of land at Khaparkheri village. The land was sold for Rs 75 lakh, for which Rs 5 lakh advance were taken. “Iqbal had handed over the money to his daughter, Amarjit Kaur, much to the chagrin of Harpreet and his family,” said the police.

Harpreet, in connivance with his uncle, Davinder Singh, an advocate, contacted the other accused and gave Rs 1 lakh for the murder, the police added.
