The role of Left Front chairman Biman Bose is likely to come under the scanner of the Calcutta High Court for holding a rally at the Brigade Parade Ground on February 8.

After the High Court ruling to serve a show-cause notice to the president of DYFI Pratim Ghosh on the Brigade rally, the Left Front chairman may be dragged into a legal battle on the same issue.

Environmentalist Subhas Dutta brought the allegation in the hearing on Monday before a Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court that court order had been violated during the rally at the Brigade ground. Following this the Court called for a report from the Army authorities of Fort William, which is the owner and custodian of the Brigade Parade Ground as well as Maidan.

In the save ‘Victoria’ case, the Calcutta High Court had banned the use of open ovens and burning of leaves in the Maidan in an order on September 28, 2007. The High Court ruled that no vehicle will be allowed to park within three km from the Victoria Memorial. It also ordered that any political party holding a rally would have to give an undertaking in this regard to the Army authorities and the Kolkata Police.

Bose had reportedly given an undertaking to the Army authorities and the Kolkata Police for complying with the court’s order during the rally at Brigade ground on February 8. So, after the report which is likely to be placed by the Army authorities, the role of Bose might come under the scrutiny of the High Court.

Subhas Dutta had visited the Maidan on Monday morning, a day after the rally, to ascertain how the ground had been damaged. Dutta alleged in the court that open ovens had been used for cooking during the rally, which had been banned by the court. Dutta placed a few photographs published in newspapers to substantiate the facts.
