Chandigarh, February 4 The coaching programme of Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) got a big boost as Doug MacCurdy, a player development adviser with the International Tennis Federation (ITF), will conduct a tennis workshop at the Sector 10 CLTA Tennis Stadium here from February 18 to 25.

MacCurdy is recipient of the International Tennis Hall of Fame Educational Merit Award in 1993 and the ITF Award for Services to the Game in 1998.

Disclosing this information here today, CLTA chairman Rajan Kashyap said Dough MacCurdy had shown keen interest in coaching programme of the CLTA, specially the Rural Scheme (CHART). The CLTA chairman met MacCurdy, who has been working for the past two years as a player development adviser with the Chinese Tennis Association under the auspices of the ITF, the International Olympic Committee and the Chinese Olympic Committee in preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games, in New Delhi on January 23.

The All India Tennis Association (AITA) has enrolled the services of Dough MacCurdy for revamping the tennis set up in the country, for one year. The American professional sports consultant will also evaluate and develop a blueprint for result-oriented player development for the future of Indian tennis.

“The workshop under MacCurdy in Chandigarh will not be one-off thing. The renowned tennis adviser would be frequently visiting Chandigarh for the CLTA coaches orientation programme. Besides upgrading the coaching programme, MacCurdy would also be laying special emphasis on physical fitness, explaining the modern coaching methods etc,” said Kashyap.

“CLTA would implement whatever plan MacCurdy prepares after evaluation of the CLTA coaches and players,” said Kashyap.

From 1984 to 1997, MacCurdy advised national associations, implemented development programs, educated coaches and trained players in over 160 countries. In 1995, MacCurdy was named general manager of the ITF while continuing to serve as director of development. Prior to moving to the ITF headquarters in London in 1984, MacCurdy was the director of instruction at the Lawrenceville Tennis Camp, chief coach for the ITF and a consultant to the USTA. MacCurdy also served as a television commentator for the French Open from 1986 to 1997. He was co-author of the book Sports Illustrated Tennis and author of numerous articles on all aspects of tennis.
