Following the humiliating performance by the Marxists in the civic body elections, the smaller partners in the Left Front are getting ready to take on the big brother CPM at a meeting slated for June 9, called by Left Front chairman Biman Bose to discuss the future plans for the ruling alliance.
The results show the CPM cadres in districts had sent wrong field reports to state unit headquarters at Alimuddin Street. For instance, in the 141-ward Kolkata Municipal Corporation, CPM won only in 33 while a report from party’s Kolkata district committee had claimed they would win at least 60. Smaller allies like CPI and Forward Bloc performed better than the CPM.
“As the big brother in the Left Front, the CPM should come up with the explanation for the disaster,” said RSP leader Kshiti Goswami, adding the matter will be discussed at June 9 meeting.
A senior CPI leader said the results for the Left could have been more disastrous had the alliance between the Congress and Trinamool stayed. The allies, who have blamed Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee for the disaster, have requested Bose to ensure the former is present at the upcoming meeting.
The CPM brass also fears a section of smaller allies may seek discussion over the issue of early elections Mamata Banerjee has been pressing for. Earlier, State Fisheries Minister Kiranmoy Nanda and RSP leader Kshiti Goswami had backed Banerjee’s demand.
“The people have written the death certificate of the Left Front. We should follow people’s mandate,” said Nanda, reacting to the Left Front debacle in the recent civic body elections.
