New Delhi At a time when every public appearance and word uttered could have an impact on what the ballot boxes would offer two months later, Delhi Congress Chief J P Aggarwal proudly and unabashedly took a donkey ride in the walled city after he was declared “Mahamurkh” of the year at a ‘conference of fools’ in Old Delhi.

Aggarwal was bestowed with the title for “fooling” the electorate and help add to the numbers of the Murkh Society through his “foolish” political ways.

“It is election time and this is our satirical way of reminding politicians that manner in which they conduct themselves 365 days a year, no matter how hard they try to portray themselves,” says R P Gupta, founder of the Antarrashtriya Murkh Maha Sammelan.

The sammelan is organised every year after Holi and has earlier conferred the honour on Congress politicians Ram Babu Sharma, Narender Nath, Mangat Ram Singhal and Yoganand Shastri.

“Holi is a festival of fun and pranks and taking digs at each other is just an extension of the tradition,” Gupta says. He adds that the organisation has branches all over the country and in Russia too.

While nominations are usually invited from members of the organisation, non-members, too, are welcome to send in their recommendations. The winner is selected unanimously, garlanded with cans, crowned with a jester’s cap and then given a donkey ride.

Aggarwal, who was the showstopper this year, says: “This is a tradition in Purani Dilli of continuing with the fun and frolic associated with Holi, quite similar to the concept of April Fools’ Day the world over. I am actually quite honoured with the title as I have grown up in Old Delhi,” he chuckles.
