DPS, Vasant Kunj lose in title-clash

New Delhi, February 4 Boys Sports Company from Bangalore defeated Delhi Public School, Vasant Kunj, 2-0 to win the ESPN-STAR Sports Junior Premier League, an inter-school football tournament, here today.

Boys Sports Company received the winner’s cheque of Rs 50,000 while the runners-up local school had to be satisfied with Rs 30,000. The tournament, involving more than 1,200 schools across 23 cities, is modelled on the English Premier League.

Top 16 teams participated in a league-cum-knockout format and the winning side from each region qualified for the all-India finals in Delhi. The Player of the Tournament from each city gets a chance to watch a Premier League match in April.

DB Thakur of the Bangalore outfit got the Player of the Tournament (goodies worth Rs. 7500) while K Abhilash of DPS got the Man of the Match (Nike football shoes). Cletus Paul from Don Bosco, Mumbai, was adjudicated the best goalkeeper (worth Rs. 5000) and Karunakaran U from Boys Sports Company ended up as the leading goal scorer, winning Rs. 5000.
