Ever since the late night raid here on January 27, neighbours have not stopped muttering how the “cruel doctor” could have been so “normal”. A few things about him were noticed — he had plenty of money, he was paranoid about his security, he always ordered food from outside and was very, very discreet.
A security guard at the colony told this correspondent that a few days before the police raid, Kumar had taken away various articles from his apartment in a matador. The police could later recover a few insignificant documents and some photographs.
The guard said Kumar had his own personal security man who kept a cautious eye on the main door from his post — 20 paces away from the entrance. He rarely spoke to other colony guards. They also noticed he had been discharged the night Kumar took out his things.
Neighbours said Kumar did not exactly live in this apartment. He came at night with a woman, and left early next morning. Though the apartment was fully equipped, Kumar always ordered food from outside. He also loved cars and always kept a fleet ready. But his favourite was a white Honda, the guard said.
The colony’s gardener Yadav said Kumar had called him once to spruce up his terrace garden. “He bought plants worth Rs 20,000. I never saw anything extraordinary.”
Meanwhile, three teams from different states are trying to hunt down the doctor. On Thursday, exactly a week after the raid at Kumar’s Sector 23 clinic, the police produced in court his driver Harpal, former servants Ramesh and Suresh, and a nurse Linda. Ramesh and Suresh were cooks at RML Hospital. They were picked up along with the hospital’s staff nurse Linda on Wednesday evening.
Both men and Linda — a resident of Manipur — were associated with Dr Kumar’s clinic in Palam Vihar, the police have said. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Surya Pratap Singh granted a two-day police remand to all four accused. Joint commissioner Manjeet Singh Ahlawat said, “All three were associated at some point of time with Kumar’s clinic before they shifted to the government hospital.”
Linda’s lawyer Hunupuii said, “My client has worked at RML Hospital for over two years now. She has nothing to do with any kidney racket.” But police sources said Linda had worked full-time at Kumar’s clinic in 2005.
There is still no news from the Gurgaon Police team that was sent to Moradabad on Wednesday with warrants for another driver Jagdish. Ten teams have also been sent to Jaipur to find out more about this illegal network.
