37-year-old actor Harish Khanna’s novel venture, The Glasshouse Project is clearly inspired by Shakespeare’s famous maxim of the entire world being a stage. Since the NSD Theatre Utsav began on January 3 in Delhi, Khanna is performing on a very special stage, a glasshouse. Gimmicky or just plain weird, Khanna plans to keep his performance going till January 18, till midnight. His long time friend Abhilash Pillai attempted to explain his bizarre act. “Harish has always wanted to be in a continuous performance mode,” says Pillai. “His favourite line is we shouldn’t act, we should live.” Pillai then suggested that he should perform from a glasshouse, which will allow him to live and not act, and still be visible to the viewers. Talk about drama for real.

Khanna who is a guest lecturer at NSD, has an illustrious profile to back up his rather interesting act. After graduating from the hallowed quarters of NSD in 1993, Khanna has performed with bigwigs like Prasanna, Ranjit Kapoor and Anuradha Kapoor. He has also acted in Govind Nihalani’s Sanshodhan and Hazar Chaurasi Ki Ma, Milan Luthria’s Kachche Dhage, Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Charas and Sujith Sarkar’s Yahaan.

Khanna has equipped himself with all basic amenities within his glasshouse. He cooks for himself, has some home appliances like a refrigerator and a TV inside. Onlookers gesticulate, but Khanna — at his natural best—- doesn’t allow this to distract him from his ‘acting’. “This is because he’s not acting, he’s living,” says Pillai.
