Chandigarh Under the various programmes of the Rural Water Supply scheme, drinking water supply was augmented in 475 villages till December 31, against a target of 950 villages for 2008-09. The target would be achieved by March 31, said a spokesman of the Public Health Engineering Department on Friday.

He said the ‘Rajiv Gandhi Augmentation Drinking Water Project’ is being implemented with the financial support from National Capital Region (NCR) Planning Board, for providing sustainable water supply facilities in the Mewat.

The project envisages construction of three ranney wells in the plains of river Yamuna, transporting water through a network of distribution system with boosting stations at appropriate places, and installation of 290 tubewells in the foothills of the Aravali range.

The project is 85 per cent complete and 148 villages would be provided safe drinking water by February 28, based on Ranney Well Segment. Another 245 villages would get safe drinking water through tubewells.
