While 32 structures were razed in Sector 30 B, 80 temporary structures were removed in Sector 25. Residents protested in both places alleging that they were not given any prior information about the demolition drive.
The drive was first started in Sector 30 B, where residents had set up encroachments right up till the dividing road of Sector 30 B and 29 by constructing toilets and STD booths over there.
Although there was resistance in the beginning, heavy deployment of police ensured a peaceful completion of the drive. After all the illegal structures were razed, residents lodged their protest before officials of the Estate Office and alleged they were not given any notice about the demolition.
However, Chief Inspector (Enforcement) Ashok Kumar said all residents whose structures were demolished today were informed in advance about the drive.
After completing the drive in Sector 30 B at 12.15 pm, the team headed to Sector 25 where 80 jhuggis were constructed in front of the cremation ground. At about 4 pm, after the drive was over, the jhuggi residents blocked the road in protest.
“These jhuggis had come up in the area recently. Some jhuggi residents even visited the Estate Office to complain against the drive,” the officials added.
The drive was conducted in the presence of senior officials from Estate Office and Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, including SDM Niharika Rai, Land Acquisition Officer (LAO) Hargunjit Kaur and Municipal Secretary P K Sharma.
