Mumbai A 35-year-old autorickshaw driver committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence on Sunday. The family members found a note written in English in the victim, Manoj Nair’s, pocket. The note said that his debts and harassment by a moneylender forced him to take the extreme step.

Nair had reportedly taken a loan at an exorbitant rate of interest from a female moneylender. Umangshankar Pal, Nair’s friend, said, “Two years back Nair asked me for money to retrieve his driving permit from the lady by repaying her loan. She had reportedly sold off his autorickshaw and taken away his permit for ten years according to their informal agreement. I gave him Rs 85,000 that he was supposed to use to repay a Chennai credit society’s and the moneylender’s loan. He gave some money to her but she turned him away when he asked for the permit.”

Police Inspector Chandrakant Thakur from the Mulund police station confirmed that a note was found with Nair’s body. Another police officer added that they received an application from Nair’s sister urging the police to register a case against the moneylender. “The note mentioned the moneylender’s name and we are enquiring her involvement. We will be registering an FIR soon if we find any clues pointing that she ‘harassed’ Nair into committing suicide,” said the official.

A group of autorickshaw drivers accompanied by local representatives of a political party accompanied Nair’s sister to the police station. “The moneylender is notorious for running a loan business. She gives loans to poor people and harasses them to repay it with a double or triple interest rate . Some autorickshaw drivers are willing to give their statement to the police,” said a local party head.
