After losing four lives to drunken driving in the last two months, the Chandigarh traffic police have constituted teams of traffic marshals and inspectors to check driving under the influence of liquor. They have also decided to setup checkposts to check the menace during night. SP (Traffic) Hardeep Singh Doon said: “Every life is precious for the police, so we have decided to take action against drunken driving. You will definitely find a change in the coming days as we have planned major drives to curb the menace. Clubs, pubs, discos and restaurants would be the focal points.” Police said the checkposts would be equipped with alcometers to catch those driving under the influence of liquor. “If anybody is found driving after consuming liquor, he or she would be booked and produced before the court the next day,” the SP said.
In an attempt to upgrade policing, the SP announced that he, along with other senior officers would review the performance of traffic personnel every month. “It will bring transparency and increase the efficiency of police,” he added. Also, senior traffic police officers have instructed their field staff not to stop vehicles registered outside Chandigarh until they commit a visible offence. “We have received complaints about cops stopping vehicles coming from other states. This leads to unnecessary harassment,” the SP said.
