Chandigarh Driving without helmet and under the influence of liquor snuffed the life of a 25-year-old engineer on late Sunday night.

Amandeep Singh died on the spot and his friend Ashish Wadhwa (32), who was riding pillion, sustained serious injuries after the motorcycle they were travelling on rammed into the roundabout near Hotel South End in Sector 35.

Wadhwa is struggling for his life at PGI. Sources said Amandeep, working with a private firm in Patiala, had come to the city to meet Wadhwa, an engineer with Airtel.

“Amandeep was expecting a promotion next week and had come to the city to tell Wadhwa about it. They consumed liquor in the evening and were on their way back home when the accident took place,” Wadhwa’s friend told police.

Eyewitnesses said Amandeep was speeding. “He was driving at a speed of more than 100 kmph and did not have full control over the bike. Amandeep did not notice the roundabout and rammed the bike into it,” a police officer said. Eyewitnesses called the police who rushed the duo to Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32 where doctors declared Amandeep dead on arrival. Wadhwa was referred to PGI after his condition deteriorated. Doctors attending to him at PGI said his condition is critical. Meanwhile, Amandeep’s body was handed over to his family after a postmortem on Monday.
