Pune Defence Security Corps (DSC) personnel should be prepared to take on additional security responsibilities in view of the current security scenario across the country, particularly in the wake of the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai, Pune Sub-Area Commander Brig R J Sharma said here on Wednesday.

The Corps play a crucial role in protecting key defence installations, Sharma said while addressing DSC personnel on the occasion of the 62nd Corps Day.

Pointing out that the Pune Sub-Area jurisdiction covers large parts of Maharashtra, which has a significant number of armed forces personnel and defence establishments, Sharma said DSC personnel are expected to be vigilant at all times. He emphasised that the DSC should be involved in additional security tasks, apart from static security duties. “With fresh training and reorientation courses, the DSC can perform more complex security duties, thus helping the Army. “This would also revive forces like the Central Reserve Security Force, which are already stretched and expensive in terms of their services from diverse security-related tasks,” he said.

A study on the DSC and the potential roles it could play in the current and emerging security scenarios had been carried out and its recommendations would be forwarded to the competent authorities soon, Sharma said.

Elaborating, he said, “With the growing Naxal menace in some areas of the country, the DSC will have a key role in defending military assets against sabotage, especially during transportation.”
