Mumbai Fancied Rovin D’Souza was shocked in the opening round of the Atlas 9-ball Pool Tournament at the Islam Gymkhana on Sunday.

D’Souza snatched two racks in the race-to-five but could not prevent Dhanraj from surging to a 5-2 win in one of the biggest upsets of the day.

In another upset, Faizal Fatani of Islam Gymkhana overcame formidable Rishabh Thakkar 5-2 to advance to the second round.

Fancied Mahesh Jagdale of North Indian Association fashioned a fluent 5-0 win over Dushant Sahani of Radio Club to warm up for sterner tests ahead.

Jagdale took a 3-0 lead and snatched the fourth rack with a brilliant clearance from the break. Sahani could have pulled one back in the fifth but he failed to pot the ninth ball before Jagdale returned to seal the issue.

Hasan Badami of Islam Gymkhana became the first player to enter the third round following an exciting 5-3 win over formidable Otters Club marker Samuel Selven.

Joining Badami in the third round was Avinash D who beat Reza Merchant of Islam Gymkhana by the same margin.
