New Delhi With the Capital boasting of a host of privately-conducted boxing clubs, one expected Delhi University to do really well in the all-India Inter-Varsity Boxing Championships that concluded at the Jodhpur University on Tuesday. But it was not to be, as the DU boxers failed to finish among the medallists.

It was Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) from Amritsar, Punjabi University (Patiala) and Punjab University (Chandigarh) who ended up winning maximum medals at stake to finish, in that order, atop the tally. Kurukshetra University (Haryana) finished fourth in the overall medals tally.

Talking to Sportline, DU sports director Jitender Singh Naruka said the result was not surprising. “We did not expect our boxers to set the ring on fires, particularly the way they had prepared for the showpiece event,” he said.

He reasoned that DU lacked facilities and it reflected on the performance of its boxers in the tournament. “The 11 boxers qualified to compete in the tournament were mainly from Dyal Singh and Motilal Nehru colleges. But they were no match for the biggies. They were poor in their tactics and lacked in technicalities,” he said.
