The teachers, who were joined by their counterparts in the Jawaharlal Nehru University and the Jamia Millia Islamia, said the notification has not implemented the original recommendations of the Pay Review Committee — to increase a lecturer’s salary to Rs 6,600 grade pay. They said their salaries have been restricted to Rs 6,000 academic grade pay instead.
Samir Singh, who teaches at the Kirori Mal College, said the difference of Rs 600 in the grade leads to a loss of Rs 9,000 per month after adding the allowances.
“After 14 years, when a lecturer gets promoted as Associate Professor, a teacher could earn Rs 40 lakh more with Rs 6,600 pay band,” Singh said.
The lecturers are also unhappy with the Delhi University Teacher’s Association, which, they feel, has not taken up their cause. “DUTA has not taken up our demands of increasing our pay scale. They are more concerned about the senior grade clauses,” Shankar Kumar from Hindu College said. The teachers organised a campaign for their Charter of Demands, in which they called for restoration of the original grade pay.
