DU V-C Deepak Pental said the compiled reading material has been sent to a committee of scholars for analysis. “The scholars are not from Delhi University but they are renowned people and they will take a decision on the material,” he said.
Some teachers in DU are, however, unhappy over this move. “What can the ‘new people’ say that we can’t? We have enough experience to decide on the kind of texts to be taught,” says P K V Subramanium, a lecturer for the last 37 years.
Sources in the varsity say the panel has been formed after the Human Resources Development (HRD) Ministry put pressure on the varsity to act.
On February 15, ABVP activists had met HRD Minister Arjun Singh to submit a memorandum demanding the removal of the objectionable text.
“Arjun Singh was sympathetic and had promised us that he would personally ask the V-C to constitute a committee to look into the matter,” state secretary of ABVP Rohit Chahal said.
Meanwhile, ABVP members today caused a massive traffic jam at Nehru Place for over half an hour. Around 400 activists marched from Deshbandu College to Nehru Place.
Effigies of several persons, who included the text in the reading material, were also burnt. A memorandum was also submitted to the ACP of Kalkaji and Principal of Deshbandu College.
