New Delhi The Metro line between Vishwavidyalaya-Jahangirpuri was flagged off on Tuesday by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. The second line of Delhi Metro’s Phase II will be opened for public from today.

With the line completed eight months ahead of its October deadline, this is yet another milestone for the DMRC.

Dikshit, accompanied by other cabinet members and MLAs, took a ride on the line and alighted at the Azadpur station for a brief inspection. “Delhi Metro will be one of the largest Metro rail networks in the world before commencement of Commonwealth Games,” Dikshit said.

Line 2 is now 17.36-km long, from Central Secretariat to Jahangirpuri, with 15 stations. Train services from Vishwavidyalaya to Jahangirpuri would be available at intervals of 7 minutes and 20 seconds. The Metro stations at GTB Nagar, Model Town, Azadpur, Adarsh Nagar and Jahangirpuri will have facilities like separate Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) counters, close circuit television (CCTV) cameras, customer care centres and public conveniences.

Dikshit also announced that the line will further be extended from Jahangirpuri to Badli (3.42 km) and will be completed within two years.

DMRC chief E Sreedharan said three new Metro lines — Inderlok to Mundkar, Indraprastha to Noida and Yamuna to Anand Vihar — will be commissioned in the current financial year.
