New Delhi, February 5 While protesting against St Stephen's Principal Valson Thampu inside the college campus, the Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) today faced stiff resistance from an unlikely foe. More than a hundred students gathered outside the staffroom and shouted slogans against the DUTA members for ruining the "sanctity of the college premises".

"You should protest outside the college and not inside," shouted the students at around 100 teachers gathered in the college.

The students, however, made it clear that they were not taking sides. "We love our college and this is the first time in its history that outsiders have come in to condemn the principal. All we say is that such slogan shouting is affecting the general environment and spoiling our education," Boban Verghese, a student, said.

Another topic of discontent was the appointment of Thampu as the OSD Principal of St Stephen's without him fulfilling the eligibility criteria. "We demand the removal of the OSD and written apologies to both the teachers," DUTA president Aditya Narayan Mishra said.

Later, Thampu held a press conference to clear the air and said the showcause notices were sent only after students complained about the teachers. "I have the complaints on record and I will very soon make them public," he said. Thampu said so far he had shied away from the media because he did not want to take the matter outside the college.
