Kolkata, January 7 One of the most important and high-profile officials of the East Bengal Club, vice-president Manas Mukherjee, has resigned from his post with the club today.

A few of the executive committee members, belonging to his lobby, have already resigned from their respective posts yesterday, ever since the team’s poor showing in the I-League.

It seems that six more officials, all loyal to Mukherjee, and in the executive committee, are planning to quit the club’s administration. Apart from merely quitting, the CPI(M) MLA, has clearly raised the question on the “amateurish” and “disorganised” handling of the club’s administration.

It was learnt that the key reason behind Mukherjee’s decision to quit is the growing influence of sponsor Kingfisher and their representative Amit Sen, who has been accused of interfering in the club’s policy matters in the last few years.

Asked to react on the matter, Mukherjee said: “This disorganised and amateurish way of administration must change before the team starts its campaign for the next season. I have been involved in administrative matters, I should not leave the club in its crisis period.” The club officials are going to have discussions on Thursday evening after the team returns from Goa, where they are playing their I-League match against Salgaocar tomorrow.
