Chandigarh The Election Commission has sought a report from the Haryana government on the alleged allotment of liquor vends for 2009-10 without the poll panel's permission after the model code of conduct came into force. "We have sought a reply from the government and asked them to explain. The government had not taken any permission from us (the EC). The ETC (Excise and Taxation Commissioner) met us and said the government will be filing its reply within a day or two," Haryana's Chief Electoral Officer Sajjan Singh said on Friday.

Singh said according to the EC guidelines, no fresh auction of liquor vends could be held without prior permission of the EC till the model code of conduct was in force. The state authorities had been asked to furnish their comments by today, giving details of auctions held so far after the announcement of elections. The auction process is still on and scheduled to be completed by the month-end.

"We will be giving our reply in a day or two," Chief Secretary Dharamvir said.
