Kolkata Admitting that the introduction of sex education in schools is not possible at the moment, state School Education Minister Partha Dey said lifestyle education should be introduced instead.

He was speaking at a discussion on sex education in schools, organised by the Rabindra Bharati University and Durbar Mahila Samanhaya Committee, an organisation for sex workers, on Monday.

“It is necessary to impart sex education to youths. Since they are given education on various issues, why should sex education be under any veil? This, however, does not mean we have to exclusively talk about sex education. We have introduced lifestyle education, which also covers sex education,” said Dey.

“Outside forces teach our students the distorted facts about certain issues. We have already introduced lifestyle education, and will soon review the results and decide about broadening its scope,” said Dey. Further discussions are needed for properly implementing lifestyle and sex education, he added.

Stressing that women usually fall victim to human trafficking, the minister said one should be careful of not indulging in such acts that induce the trade. Dey also stressed on the need of giving due respect to sex workers. “If they approach the government about schools for their children, we will be happy to consider their case. We may not give them job assurances, but we can help in setting up residential schools for their children,” said Dey.
