Mumbai, January 11 Eight children and five adults were injured when a toy trolley at a park in Kandivli fell over on to one side on Friday morning. Two children and two adults with major injuries along with three children with less serious injuries had to be operated upon after their annual picnic at the theme park turned sour.

The Samata Nagar police have registered a case of rash driving and negligence and arrested Amir (24), the driver of the train.

According to the police, the three-bogey toy trolley at the Evershine Dream Park in Thakur Village, Kandivli (East), overturned when an axle broke. As the connection of the engine to the cars was severed, the engine sped ahead on the incline while the trolley-cars tilted and fell. Students and teachers in the train as well as those waiting to get in were injured.

Five of the children are from the kindergarten section of the Nikunj Education Trust’s Sri Kishorebhai Sheth Balvatika in Andheri (East). The trust also runs the Smt Ramalakshmi Narendra Sheth Vidyamandir Secondary and Primary Section. The children from the Nikunj school were standing in a queue awaiting their turn to board while students of another school were enjoying the joyride.

At the Shree Sai Hospital in Thakur Complex, where some of the students and teachers were rushed, doctors said the children were “not critical”. “The patients were brought to the hospital around 11 am. There are patients with fractures, hip bone dislocation. Two children have supra-injuries and need major operations. One child suffered dislocation of the shoulder joint and another has suffered a hip dislocation,” said Dr S M Goel, chief doctor of the hospital. “One lady needs an ear operation and the other has a head injury.”

Pre-primary school students from the Nikunj school, Prathamesh Palande, Vibhanshu Mistry, Ata Khan, Soham Jangam, Vidhi Yadav, Suhani Vishwakarma and Kisha Morabia were admitted to the hospital by noon. Pooja Kankani, a teacher, and Dolly Oza with her daughter Dimali (2) were also admitted. “Five children from my school were standing next to the toy train when one compartment fell on them, injuring them in the process,” said Principal Gladys Fernandes. The children are all aged between two years and four years. They were at the park with eight teachers on an annual picnic.

“We have arrested the driver for negligence. We are also looking at other people whose negligence could have contributed to the incident,” said Police Inspector Ambadas Pawar.
