Eight cops get 1 year in prison for helping Dawood aides escape in 1992

Mumbai, January 3 Eight policemen, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector, two Head Constables and five constables, were sentenced to one year simple imprisonment by the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrates court on Wednesday on charges of abetting the getaway of two Dawood aides in 1992.

The court, however, acquitted seven other co-accused who are linked to the two Dawood aides — Baba Mobin and Ramchandra Bacchi Pandey.

Pursuant to their conviction all the accused officials were let off on a bail bond of Rs 10,000 each.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 10) K M M Prasanna, the accused officials were facing charges of abetting the escape of Mobin and Pandey in 1992. “The eight officials have been convicted and released on bail,” DCP Prasanna told Newsline.

The convicted police officials are Assistant Sub-Inspector Gangaram Chavan currently from Local Arms-3, Head Constable Pandurang Mohite (Daravi), Head Constable Shashikant Gavas (Local Arms-3), Constable Baburao Deshmukh (Local Arms-3), Constable Sugandha Gadge (Trombay), Constable Vilas Gurav (Shivaji Park), Constable Madhukar Kadam (Dahisar), Constable Shashikant Desai (Local Arms-3).

Prasanna said that the convicted police officers who were attached to the MIDC police station at the time of the incident had abetted the escape of Mobin and Pandey who were facing charges under TADA.

The officials helped them escape in the MIDC jurisdiction subsequent to their production in the court.

Thereafter, a case was registered against the officials in the MIDC police station under Sections 223 (Escape from confinement or custody negligently suffered by public Servant), 225 (Resistance or obstruction to lawful apprehension of another person), 225 (a) (Omission to apprehend or sufferance of escape on part of public servant), 203 (Giving false information respecting an offence committed) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).
