Eight held after encounter in Salboni

Kolkata Eight members of Sidhu Kanhu Gana Militia were arrested from three villages in Salboni police station area in West Midnapore on Wednesday. A huge cache of arms was seized. The seizures and arrests came after the security forces cracked down on a shelter of the Militia following a tip-off. A search operation was conducted in three villages of Salboni police station area following an encounter.

According to sources, the encounter began at 4.30 am and continued till 8.30 am.

The eight persons arrested include Ashok Mahato, Kunaram, Raju Mahato, Gostha Behari Mahato, Harku Mahato, Anibesh alias Pintu, and Subroto Roy.

“Among them, Ashok Mahto is an important catch for us since he was present in several operations conducted by the village defense squad of the Maoists and the Militia,” said a senior police officer.

The security forces conducted the operation in three villages ¿ Majurkata, Kalshibhanga and Pathuri.

“We have seized 100 kgs of explosives, two guns and 25 rounds of bullets from the shelter, two land mines were also recovered from the spot,” said Manoj Verma, SP, West Midnapore.
