The fossils were identified by Wadia Institute of Dehradun. Says Jitendra Sharma, Chief Conservator of Forests Hills, Punjab, “The identification of these fossils, dating back to millions of years, is significant, and will promote eco tourism. About 20 fossils had been discovered from Siswan and Mirzapur area some time back. Recently, eight fossils were identified, and were found to be those of giraffes, camels, elephants etc that existed millions of years ago in the region,” Sharma pointed out.
According to field experts, the Shivaliks are a treasure land in terms of mammalian fossils. “This area is a goldmine. The active participation of the locals will help develop eco tourism in the region,” added Sharma. ]
The department is keen on making arrangements for appropriate display of these fossils. The Forest Department also wants to collaborate with various universities for further study on the subject.
