Surat, January 8 An 80-year-old man was overpowered in his son’s house in the posh City Light area of Surat by a liftman and a domestic servant on Tuesday afternoon, who then decamped with gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 2 lakh. Police said Sunderlal Mehta was alone in the flat on the tenth floor of Surya Complex, when his servant Rohit Jadav opened the door and allowed liftman Dinesh inside.

Before Sunderlal could understand anything, Rohit and Dinesh overpowered him and tied him with a rope and locked him inside the bathroom after sticking adhesive tape on his mouth to prevent him from raising an alarm.

The two then opened the almirah and escaped with the gold and silver ornaments. Sunderlal’s daughter-law Rekha arrived later in the afternoon and was shocked to find the main door open when she tried opening it with a spare key. Further surprise lay in wait for her when she saw the almirah door open in the bedroom. She later untied her father-in-law and informed her husband Rajendra about the incident, who rushed home, and then lodged a complaint with Umra police station.

Umra police staff immediately rushed to the spot with dog squad and forensic officials to start investigations.

Umra police inspector R S Patel said, “Rajendra’s is working as an engineer in Reliance and left his house for work on Tuesday morning. Rekha went to a physiotherapy class in the morning. Their children were in college, while Sunderlal was alone in the house. The liftman of the complex was appointed on the job two days ago, while Rohit was appointed by Rajendra a couple of months ago to take care of his aged father. We have found some links in this incident and have launched a search operation to nab the accused.”
