Pune Departmental action would be initiated against the police personnel and their kin who are found taking part in election rallies and campaigns of political parties in the premises of police quarters in Pune.

Joint Commissioner of Police Rajendra Sonawane said that the election code of conduct for Pune police has been released, as per which none in the police force are allowed to campaign for any political party.

The election code of conduct has been issued under the Police Force Restriction of rights Act, 1968. As per the code of conduct, police lines and police quarters come under the category of government property. Hence banners, stickers, flags and election signs of any political party should not be displayed anywhere in their premises. Political parties should not paint the walls in the police lines and police quarters for election campaigns. Also, police personnel are not supposed to put up stickers, banners, flags and election signs of any political party on their body, clothes, vehicles and houses.

"Almost every political party visits the police lines and police quarters during elections for campaigning. It has been observed in the past that brawls and fights take place in the police lines during the election period as some police personnel or their kin show active participation in the campaigns by political parties. To avoid this we have issued a code of conduct for all the police staff in Pune," said Sonawane.

"Not only the working police personnel, but also their children and family members residing in the police quarters are supposed to follow the election code of conduct," he said.

"Besides, the political parties are supposed to give intimation to the local police stations and reserve police inspectors for carrying out election campaigns in the premises of police lines and police quarters. As per the code of conduct, election campaigns would be allowed only from 8 am to 1 pm and 4 pm to 10 pm," Sonwane said, adding, "Hooliganism and misbehavior will not be tolerated. Use of loud speakers is not allowed."

There are eight police lines in Pune and Pimpri along with police quarters of state reserve police force in Wanavdi and Hadapsar area.
