Chandigarh The court of additional district and sessions judge Ravi Kumar Sondhi on Friday convicted Puneet, an electrician, on charges of murdering a 72-year-old resident of Sector 18 in 2005. The quantum of sentence will be pronounced on the February 17.

In May 2005, Brij Rani was found bludgeoned to death with deep head injuries. The open electricity switchboards at her house had provided vital clues to the police leading to Puneet’s arrest. Investigations revealed that the electrician had killed Rani in an inebriated state with the intention to rob her. The victim’s gold jewellery, including her earrings, a chain, ring and bangles, were found missing from the spot.

Rani’s body was discovered by Satish Sharma, a tenant living on the first floor of the same house. Prosecution said Sharma immediately informed Jyoti, the daughter of the deceased, who lived in Sector 12, Panchkula, about the murder.

The circumstantial evidence as well as the open switchboards at the scene of the crime led to the conviction of the accused, the prosecution said.
